A brief review of long - term X - ray and optical variability in radio - quiet AGN

چکیده
Long-time-scale X-ray and optical variability is a key characteristic of AGN. Here, we summarise our current understanding of the X-ray and optical continuum variability of radioquiet AGN and the relation between the two bands. We demonstrate the strong connection between the X-ray variability properties of AGN and the variability of stellar-mass black hole candidates on much shorter time-scales, and discuss the implications of this result for the origins of the variability. The relationship between optical and X-ray variability is complex, with some AGN showing strong X-ray/optical correlations while others show no obvious correlation. We suggest a possible explanation for this variety of behaviour.

Radio-Variability in Radio-Quiet Quasars and Low-Luminosity AGN
We report on two surveys of radio-weak AGN to look for radio variability. We find significant variability with an RMS of 10-20% on a timescale of months in radio-quiet and radio-intermediate quasars. This exceeds the variability of radio cores in radio-loud quasars (excluding blazars), which vary only on a few percent level. The variability in radio-quiet quasars confirms that the radio emissio...
متن کاملAGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملOn the origin of radio emission in radio quiet quasars
The radio emission in radio loud quasars originates in a jet carrying relativistic electrons. In radio quiet quasars (RQQs) the relative radio emission is ∼ 10 times weaker, and its origin is not established yet. We show here that there is a strong correlation between the radio luminosity (LR) and X-ray luminosity (LX) with LR ∼ 10 −5LX , for the radio quiet Palomar-Green (PG) quasar sample. Th...
متن کاملAccretion disc - corona and jet emission from the radio - loud Narrow Line Seyfert
We perform X-ray/UV spectral and X-ray variability studies of the radio-loud Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy RXJ1633.3+4719 using XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations from 2011 and 2012. The 0.3−10 keV spectra consist of an ultra-soft component described by an accretion disc blackbody (kTin = 39.6 +11.2 −5.5 eV) and a power-law due to the thermal Comptonization (Γ = 1.96 −0.31) of the disc em...
متن کاملLong - Term X - Ray and Tev Variability of Mrk 501
We present X-ray observations of the nearby TeV blazar Mrk 501 obtained with RXTE during 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2004. The goal of this study is twofold: 1) characterize the long-term X-ray flux and spectral variability of the source with a model-independent analysis, and 2) investigate the X-ray and TeV correlation on long timescales (> days). Significant spectral variations were observed ...
